Systems Engineer Summer Intern Review

As a systems engineer my role can range from working to optimise systems operating requirements to using data to forecast trends and identify relationships in systems. In addition to this I worked on sustainability of in-service systems.

I was given plenty of responsibility and influence over my tasks, often independently gathering information from other members of teams or using contacts provided by my line manager to shape my decision-making.

I have developed my data analysis, problem solving, communication and carbon accounting skills, as well as learned lots about business operations.

My line manager was often very busy but still ensure to set aside weekly meeting where they would support me on tasks and steer me in the right direction. This was very helpful to ensure I stayed on track. Moreover, my line manager put me in contact with plenty of subject matter experts from diverse teams to provide additional perspectives where they could not.

Relatively relaxed, friendly and welcoming. Most people are happy to tell you what they do, how things work and put time aside to speak to interns in more detail. I was invited to weekly football with the office which always helps us get familiar.

I enjoyed being in a professional environment and learning what systems engineers do in practice (procedures they follow, problem solving they incorporate, targets and interdisciplinary nature of the role).
