Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
Worked in an in-service support role, so did lots of work with existing part, including importing/exporting, dealing with repairs, calibration tasks and tooling loans. My role allowed me to visit the different hangars quite often to speak with fitters/exporters to help with jobs outside of the UK.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yeah, once I was familiarised with the systems in the first few weeks and after shadowing my team, I was slowly given my own tasks to manage and complete. Given the nature of my work, tasks can take months to complete, so a lot of it involved picking up existing tasks from team members and working from there.

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
Yeah, communicating with different teams/departments was a big part of my role. It was great to get industry experience, I think working on real projects is a skill that's worth a lot to employers.

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
My team was very accommodating, I was able to set my own objectives and they helped me complete those throughout my time at BAE. We did a mid-placement review after 6 weeks which was good to make sure I was on-track to completing my goals.

Company Culture
What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
It was honestly really good in my office. It's quite a large office so you get people from different teams working besides you, but everyone gets along well, and my team introduced me to a lot of people in the office so there was always someone there I could be working with, even if my team was off.

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
Very much, the company is large and plenty of opportunities. Was able to get visits/tours of the site and felt very immersed in the industry.

What advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems
Don't be shy, ask all the questions you can think of. Once you're comfortable, reach out to the wider company and see what other teams/departments can host for you. Being able to get up out of your desk and see other stuff and speak to other people in different roles is exciting and beneficial.
