Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
What I Did:
I analysed user behaviour across our digital channels to identify friction points and areas for improvement. This involved reviewing funnel performance, drop-off rates, and customer interactions using tools like Adobe Analytics and session replay platforms.
I supported experimentation and optimisation, contributing to A/B testing initiatives and interpreting results to guide product decisions. My insights helped shape enhancements that improved conversion rates and user experience.
I created clear, actionable reports and dashboards to track key performance indicators such as traffic, engagement, and revenue. These reports helped stakeholders understand product performance and informed strategic decisions.
I acted as a bridge between data and decision-making, translating complex analytics into meaningful recommendations that influenced product roadmaps and prioritisation.
I remained proactive and curious, continuously seeking ways to enhance our digital offering through competitor analysis, industry trends, and customer feedback.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Proactively identifying opportunities for improvement in the digital customer journey, rather than waiting for issues to be flagged. I used data to uncover friction points and initiated conversations around potential solutions.
Driving experimentation and optimisation, not just supporting it. I took responsibility for interpreting A/B test results and ensuring insights were translated into meaningful product changes.
Creating and maintaining performance dashboards, which became key tools for stakeholders. I owned the accuracy, clarity, and relevance of these reports, ensuring they reflected the most important metrics and trends.
Influencing product decisions by translating complex analytics into clear, actionable recommendations. I didn’t just provide data—I made sure it was understood and used to guide strategy.
Collaborating across teams with a sense of accountability. I made sure my contributions aligned with both customer needs and business goals, and I followed through to see the impact of my work.
Staying ahead of trends and competitor activity, taking initiative to bring fresh insights into the team and inform our digital strategy.

Support and Guidance
How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
Regular 1:1s with my manager were a key part of my development. These sessions gave me space to reflect on my progress, raise any challenges, and get feedback on my work. I felt listened to and supported, and they helped me stay aligned with team priorities.
Wider team meetings provided valuable context on what other teams were working on and how my work fit into the bigger picture. They also gave me exposure to different areas of the business and helped me build confidence in presenting and contributing to group discussions.
I was paired with a grad buddy, which was incredibly helpful. They offered informal support, answered questions I didn’t feel comfortable asking in larger meetings, and helped me navigate the culture and ways of working at British Gas.
The wider digital team was welcoming and collaborative. I had opportunities to learn from experienced analysts, product managers, and designers, and I always felt encouraged to ask questions and share ideas.
Overall, the combination of structured check-ins, informal support, and access to a knowledgeable team made my internship a really positive and enriching experience.

Company Culture
What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The Emerging Talent team played a key role in making my experience positive and well-supported from onboarding through to the end of my placement. The onboarding process was smooth and thoughtfully structured, helping me settle in quickly and understand the company’s values, tools, and ways of working.
Regular check-ins and communications from the Emerging Talent team ensured I always knew what to expect and where to go for support.
My grad buddy was a fantastic resource—approachable, knowledgeable, and always willing to help me navigate both day-to-day tasks and the wider company culture.
The team also facilitated development sessions, networking opportunities, and wider digital team events, which helped me build confidence, expand my understanding of the business, and connect with others across the organisation.
Overall, Centrica’s culture and the Emerging Talent team created an environment where I felt valued, supported, and empowered to grow. It’s a place where early careers are taken seriously, and where interns are given real opportunities to make an impact.

Overall Experience
To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
One of the most valuable aspects of the internship was the chance to work in a dynamic, data-driven environment where I could see the impact of my work. I was trusted to take ownership of tasks, collaborate with different teams, and bring fresh ideas to the table. This made the experience both engaging and empowering.
Throughout the placement, I developed key skills that will inform my future career choices:
Proactive Communication & Stakeholder Engagement: I learned the importance of clear, confident communication—especially when working across teams and presenting insights. Building strong relationships with stakeholders helped me understand how to influence decisions and drive outcomes collaboratively.
Improved Prioritisation & Time Management: Balancing multiple tasks and deadlines taught me how to manage my time effectively, stay organised, and focus on what delivers the most value. These skills will be essential in any fast-paced, product-focused role.
This internship has confirmed my interest in working within digital and data-led environments, and I’m excited to continue building on the foundations I’ve gained here. It’s given me clarity on the kind of work I enjoy and the type of culture I thrive in—collaborative, supportive, and purpose-driven.

What advice would you give to others applying to Centrica
Be proactive in seeking out opportunities to learn and contribute. Whether it’s volunteering for a project, asking questions in meetings, or reaching out to someone in another team, taking initiative really helps you get the most out of the experience.
Make the most of every opportunity—from networking events and development sessions to day-to-day tasks. Every interaction is a chance to grow, gain insight, and build confidence.
And finally, don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. Some of the most rewarding moments during my internship came from trying something new, speaking up in unfamiliar settings, or tackling challenges I hadn’t faced before.
