Engineering intern Review

During this placement I worked as an engineering intern as part of the energy storage team. My role was office based, and I worked on a net-zero focused project for the majority of the 8 week period with two other engineering interns. The project involved research on the existing gas refinery site, visits to the site, meetings with teams from various disciplines and a technical presentation on our proposed solutions to the problem. We met daily with colleagues to discuss our progress and had multiple opportunities present our ideas to the wider team.

The project we worked on was fairly high in the company's priorities for future projects. Although the solutions we proposed may not necessarily be actioned, we were given responsibility over creating a final report and presenting our findings. There was a significant amount of responsibility for the team, and the work we produced seemed to be of value to the energy storage team.

Soft skills such as professional communication, team working, problem solving were all improved during the placement. Additional courses including presenting practice and excel training were also offered to al interns.

Daily meetings with a graduate engineer and weekly updates with our line manager meant we had lots of guidance throughout the placement. Other specific engineering teams were extremely supportive.

Supportive. The team was very willing to help with projects and any questions that we had. The team felt inclusive and fair to all members in my experience.

I very much enjoyed my placement. I felt that the responsibility of working on a larger project made the time more enjoyable, as we were providing real output for the company. The supportiveness of the team we worked with made for a great experience.
