Responsible Procurement Intern Review

I worked within the responsible procurement who are a team who ensure that all goods and services within Centrica are sourced in an ethical, sustainable and socially acceptable way. This involved working with procurement ESG reporting tools and gaining an awareness to the escalation process involved with non-compliant suppliers.

Yes, I was given a main project where I had to take the lead, but I also had the guidance from my manager during this. I also had side projects, using data analytics to create data visualisations where I used my initiative to complete these projects.

I have developed my skills in excel and learnt how to use Power bi during my data analytic projects. I have also improved my vendor communication and supplier management. My soft skills such as communication and collaboration were improved during this placement.

I received support and guidance from my manager who was a constant point of contact for me. They always made time to check in and answer any of the questions I asked. The wider procurement team created a welcoming environment where you could ask questions and for help.I also was supported by the Emerging Talent team who provided a wide range of activities to help develop our skills and gain as much out of the internship as possible.

Everyone at Centrica was welcoming and willing to schedule coffee chats or answer any questions if needed. The general atmosphere was collaborative and an environment where you could grow professionally which was important to me when choosing a company to work for. There are opportunities to join networks such as parent and womens.
However, I have a concern regarding diversity, particularly in terms of gender representation. During my internship, I observed that the Procurement team was predominantly male, especially in managerial and leadership roles. While everyone was welcoming and professional, the lack of visible gender diversity raised questions for me about inclusivity and equal opportunities within the department.

I believe that this internship has allowed me to grow professionally especially in the ESG side of procurement. I have been provided with a range of opportunities that increase my skillset both technical and soft skills.
