Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
Firstly I studied the Tariff Analysis process from start to finish. Then I carried out the process for myself for a potential tariff, considering whether it was feasible from a commercial perspective. I also carried out competitor analysis using USwitch Insight. This relied on me considering awards, prices and reliability. Finally I carried out multiple coding projects, working my way up to the more complex models which the Pricing Team uses on a daily basis.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
I was given a fair amount of responsibility. However I felt that I had to go out and search for it on my own initiative rather than it being entrusted to me.

Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I have developed my technical skills dramatically, especially in the realm of Excel and Python. I have also improved my presentation skills. I hosted a panel discussion for the first time in my life with an array of industry experts. I also presented to large audiences and kept them enraptured.

I received a fair amount of support and guidance. However it would have been welcome to receive more encouragement to expand my ambitions beyond my role.

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The culture was open and inclusive. I never felt that my opinion was not treated with respect. However I think that there could be more emphasis on doing more than what was required in a particular task.

Overall Experience
To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I greatly enjoyed my placement. I liked the sense of working towards achieving a noble goal like Net Zero. I also appreciated how receptive people in the company were, all the way up to senior management, to my persistent questions.

What advice would you give to others applying to Centrica
Focus on the values that Centrica highlights in its website. They are the touchstones which guide much of what they do. Be willing to shift your mindset quickly from a professional setting to a social environment. Establish a core group of friends on the internship quickly but don't let yourself be limited by it
