Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
As an intern, my role involves learning the technical, software and professional skills needed for actuarial work, including weekly training sessions on a variety of concepts. I actively contribute to client projects, applying what I’ve learned to real-world scenarios, whilst actively seeking feedback. I also get exposure to day to day life of a full time actuary and learn about the company, clients and job itself. The internship also includes collaborative workshops focused on excellence and developing role-specific capabilities. Every day brings opportunities to grow and support ongoing client work within the team.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
I was trusted with genuine responsibilities from the outset of the internship. I supported live client projects by preparing charts and reports, completing pension calculations, and collaborating with colleagues. My work contributed directly to project outcomes, and I was encouraged to ask questions and take initiative. It felt like a true role in the team, not just an observational experience, which helped build my confidence and develop key skills in a professional setting

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
Absolutely—this internship has been a real learning curve in the best way. I’ve picked up new technical skills through weekly training sessions, like how to use actuarial software and understand pension calculations. At the same time, I’ve refined my communication and problem-solving abilities by working closely with the team on live client cases. It’s one thing to study the theory, but getting hands-on has really helped everything click into place.

Whether it was walking through a abbreviation or definition, assisting when I had queries or answering questions about calculations, the team created an environment that encouraged learning and growth.
