Summer Scheme Student Review

I was shadowing a Farm Business Consultant from the Food and Farming team. About half of my time was in the office, the other was half was spent traveling round the countryside meeting various clients. I helped with various government grant applications for farmers, as well as helping with a FBT, CFA, and did a business revue, looking at ways one farmer could become more profitable and sustainable.

I think I was probably given the correct amount. I was allowed to do various projects/task by myself, but not allowed to completely submit these encase there was an error. There quite often was either a mistake or something I could have done better which allowed me to learn and improve, without the mistake being detrimental. I was also task with communicating with clients completely by myself, which I think is a good level of responsibility.

I have learnt how to navigate the government website, in terms of applying for grants. I have learnt a huge amount more about how farmers farm in Northumberland and the surrounding counties. I have learnt how to better use Excel. I have learnt a lot more about what the RPA look for when claiming for a grant, and applying for one.

Enough, there was always support there if I needed it, but it was never too close that it became as though I wasn't thinking for myself. Task would be explained in good detail to me initially, and then I was let go to do it on my own at my own speed. I was not spoon fed, but equally not ignored.

Over all positive and pleasant. Virtually no negativity. A good mix of people and personalities that created a positive environment. Initially I was surprised by the fact that there was no one in an office by themselves. Everyone is on the same level, mixed amongst each other. On any day you could be sat next to anyone, be it a director, or someone new, from any department. Everyone is keen to chat to you and introduce themselves, and make sure that you are getting on well, offering tea/coffee etc.

I found it very interesting and useful. Overall I enjoyed it, but there were days that I enjoyed less. I don't think I am quite ready to go into the office. I think I still want to do more outdoors, hands on work. I know now though what this industry entails, and what working for Savills is like, and that in the future I will certainly be looking to work at somewhere like this.
