Overview of Experience

Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
The vacation scheme involved practice overview sessions, giving me a clear insight into what each area of the firm does. My day-to-day activities also included attending meetings with my principal and Partners in my seat, and completing work on a weekly project. We were also invited to lots of networking events, allowing me to meet with people at all stages of their careers at Linklaters, expanding my professional network. There was also a group client pitch exercise, helping me develop my collaboration skills.
What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
It has been really useful to have scheduled sessions with different departments in the firm, ranging from Corporate and Capital Markets to Pro Bono and ESG. I've been able to see both the breadth and depth of services the firm offers, and through a talk with Managing Partner [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the Higherin Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions], I feel like I now have an appreciation of the strategy that Linklaters is pursuing to grow and succeed as a business.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
I think I have developed my commercial awareness across the vacation scheme, as I have been exposed to deals the firm is currently working on and had an insight into the global strategy pursued by Linklaters. I have also strengthened my ability to work in a team, particularly through the client pitch exercise. This was a time-pressured activity, requiring effective delegation and critical thinking about what points to prioritise. As a result, I feel my ability to think on my feet was also developed.

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
Everybody at the firm is incredibly friendly and open to sharing their experiences. I've felt really welcomed into the firm, and it's particularly nice to see that there is no sense of hierarchy within the firm. Partners and trainees have been working together closely, and I've felt really lucky to have had Partners give me their time to share their experiences and advice, and include me on the matters they are currently working on.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
I really enjoyed the insight, especially because I've never done a vacation scheme before. The sessions were always incredibly engaging and interactive, and questions were encouraged by everyone. This meant I could learn exactly what I wanted to and fill all the gaps in my knowledge.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Linklaters
I think it's important to build your commercial awareness up across a long period of time - it isn't the type of thing you can do overnight. I found reading LittleLaw really helpful, as well as listening to the FT News Briefing. It's really easy to make these things a habit, and then you can build your commercial awareness in an almost unnoticeable way. It's important to not just listen to/read the news, but to question what you're reading and why certain things might be happening.
