Overview of Experience
Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
We were allocated to sit within a team at the firm where we gained exposure to live matters and contributed to the workload through research and review tasks. Alongside this we also attended practice area overviews and introductions to the firm's DEI and pro bono initiatives. Networking was also encouraged and lawyers across the firm were more than happy to meet with vacation scheme students and share their experiences.
What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
It was a great opportunity to gain an insight into the trainee role and understand how work is delegated throughout the team. It really excited me to see that trainees work on a wide variety of work and are given a large range of responsibilities. Furthermore, it was interesting to gain first-hand experience of the type of tasks trainees may do and have the chance to ask my supervisor questions and get insight into the context of complex deals.

Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
The scheme has definitely allowed me to develop my commercial awareness and build my understanding of the business of law firms. I have been able to improve skills of attention to detail, analysis and professional writing. The client pitch exercise also allowed me to deploy my teamwork skills in a working environment which was great.

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
Everyone was extremely welcoming and friendly. It is evident to me that the firm invests lots of time and effort into junior members of the firm and the supportive atmosphere was clear from the outset. DEI is also something that is truly valued at Linklaters from staff networks to DEI lunches I felt like inclusion shone through during my time here.

Overall Experience
To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
This was an incredibly enjoyable experience. Whilst it was challenging, the opportunity to fully immerse myself in the workings of a large corporate law has been invaluable. Through socials and networking I have met some outstandingly interesting individuals which has made my time here so much better.

I would advise others to be prepared to ask lots of questions. There are so many interesting people and deals at the firm that intellectual curiosity is hugely beneficial.
