Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
I work with the team to help do basic tasks that are needed to complete projects. This primarily includes comparisons of properties, researching areas of growth in the industry and generating market overviews.
It was encouraged that we also networked throughout the company. I met with many directors and associates from other divisions to find out as much about Savills as possible.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yes, I was given my own project tasks to aid the team with tight deadlines. My most important role that I was given was generating research on potential growth areas in affordable housing, generating a report to explain government initiatives to directors in order for them to best approach meetings with public bodies. This allowed me to utilise the independent research skills I had generated at University and develop them further, with higher stakes over the results. I was also helping the teams work to deadlines, which was somewhat a lot of responsibility.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I developed my existing excel skills greatly - I feel comfortable using pivot tables and getting comfortable with Discounted Cash Flows. I have learnt how to create comparables for both new build and existing properties under the valuation process and the structure required to write market reports. I also developed skills in engaging with clients and the communication process with different stakeholders in the valuation process, from banks to developers.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I received mixed guidance and support. Some team members were happy to go above and beyond to help, whilst others left me with tasks that required high skill levels yet I had not been trained at all. However, I found that every single member of any team I worked with was more than happy to listen to any question I had and emphasised that no question was stupid.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Savills to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to Savills
I think being yourself is really important - I took this internship as an opportunity to explore the industry, less about trying to find a job. By being myself I was able to judge whether the industry and Savills were right for me.
