Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

I usually spend a couple of hours in the lab performing experiments. Outside of the lab, I analyse the data from my experiments. I then write up the method, results, and conclusions of my experiments so the company keep a record of them. I also attend meetings team meetings, where I often present my results. I also attend seminars to learn more about work going on outside my project.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

I was able to plan my own experiments, and I often worked alone on these. I was also allowed to work with expensive machinery.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

I have learnt many new lab techniques (e.g., ELISA, qPCR, flow cytometry), and I have learnt how to use multiple data analysis softwares (e.g., Prism, Spotfire, FlowJo, OMIQ). I often present my results at team meetings, so I now feel more confident presenting my work and it has improved my presentation skills.

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

My manager was very supportive and helped me plan my experiments, gave me feedback on my university report etc. The other people in my team were also very helpful and were always happy to answer my questions.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?

I really enjoyed my placement year at GSK. I learnt a lot of new lab techniques and developed my soft skills, which will be very helpful in my career. I got on well with the other students and the people in my department.

Would you recommend GSK to a friend?

Yes

What advice would you give to others applying to GSK

Prepare answers to common interview questions, I used the STAR technique to structure my answers. I also read about the company and learnt more about the drugs they have on the market which are relevant to my department (e.g., Benlysta for lupus as I was applying for the immunology group). I also revised using my immunology notes from university to prepare for the technical questions. If you prepare well for the interview it will make you feel less nervous !
