Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
Supporting the tyre performance with event based tasks with more detailed review of competitor tyre approaches.
Before a race weekend, I would help prepping for the weekend with simulations and coding, then in event I will help the tyre team with some of their tasks as well as more in depth analysis of the other teams tyre approaches feeding back to our team.
Post event, I would largely be focused on an in-depth review of race also looking over the weekend as a whole.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
As expected, earlier in the year I was mainly focused on my own competitor analysis tasks and getting up to speed.
Throughout the year, I have been more and more exposed to what the rest of the tyre team do and their analysis and have been trusted more when other team members have not been present.
Overall, for me it was the correct amount of responsibility by the end of the placement but it would've been interesting to have been exposed to it earlier.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I have greatly improved my coding skills, especially in MATLAB which was taught to a very low level at my university. In this role I have also been exposed to some Python, which I tend not to use as well as Excel which I had some exposure to but never used in anger.
In terms of soft skills, I have learnt concise communication, which is important for the high-pressure environment as well as perseverance and punctuality while working strange time zones with long shifts.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I was accompanied by the placement student before me for the first 4 weeks of my internship, where they handed over most of my tasks for me to get familiarised.
After the placement student left, I obviously had less guidance but there was always someone I could ask in my immediate team. Ideally, I would have had more feedback throughout the year to see how I was performing for a better gauge.

How would you rate the support and guidance from the wider team?

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
As a whole, Williams is a friendly and exciting place to work where opportunities will present themselves if you work well.
The culture in the race team is very varied and depends on your line manager, some groups work far more hours than others with seemingly little consideration for the employees' wellbeing while others will focus on the employees' workload far more.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
Although I have learnt a lot and have enjoyed a lot of separate parts of the placement, this job is not one I can come back to due to the long hours and weekends worked for the job.
It is a very rewarding job and is gratifying when the team does well however it seems that the company doesn't do enough to make up for the long hours and weekends that the race team works.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Atlassian Williams F1 Team to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to Atlassian Williams F1 Team
Try to involve yourself with all the social aspects at Williams because it will help over the year to have colleagues that are also friends and will also help you feel like people in the company are more approachable.
Also ask for help, guidance or feedback whenever you need it rather than when you think might be a convenient time for someone. People would generally rather you ask and get things right than wait for something.
Be prepared to give up your weekends and free time completely!
