My role involves supporting surveyors and consultants in managing business rates liabilities for a range of commercial property clients. Day-to-day, this includes analysing property data, reviewing rateable values, assisting with preparing check and challenge documents to present to the VOA, and preparing evidence to support appeals.

Yes, I’ve been given a great deal of responsibility throughout my placement. One of the key indicators of this trust is that I’ve been allowed to attend site inspections on my own. This involves assessing properties, taking measurements, gathering photographic evidence, and then reporting back to the team, all of which require accuracy and good judgment.
I also have regular interaction with clients, whether that’s requesting information, discussing property details, or updating them on progress. Being trusted to represent Savills in these conversations has really boosted my confidence and communication skills.

I’ve strengthened my analytical skills through tasks such as reviewing valuation data, comparing rental evidence, and identifying anomalies in assessments. My Excel skills have improved significantly as I regularly work with spreadsheets to manipulate property data and present findings clearly. Beyond technical skills, I’ve developed professionally too. My communication skills have improved through client interaction and working within a busy team. I’ve learned how to prioritise tasks, manage deadlines, and maintain attention to detail in a fast-paced environment.

I’ve received a high level of support and guidance throughout my placement at Savills, especially during the first few months when I was getting to grips with the business rates system and internal processes. The team has been incredibly approachable and always willing to take the time to explain things clearly, whether it’s how to navigate the VOA portal, understand a valuation, or prepare evidence for an appeal.

The company culture at Savills has been one of the most enjoyable aspects of my placement. From day one, the atmosphere has been professional yet welcoming, and the team made me feel included and supported straight away. There’s a strong sense of collaboration within the Business Rates team

I’ve really enjoyed my placement at Savills. I particularly enjoyed the variety of the work — from visiting sites and interacting with clients to preparing appeal documentation and analysing valuation data.
Overall, I’ve found the placement to be challenging, engaging, and a great stepping stone in my career, and I’d highly recommend it to anyone interested in commercial property.
