Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
My job role involves supporting multiple talent programmes and capability events for GSK's Global Finance team. Key projects are delivering Finance development days each quarter to upskill our Finance colleagues across areas such as digital, business acumen and soft skills. I work with a number of internal and external stakeholders to deliver an early talent programme for external university students and help drive other internal initiatives to support our Thriving Finance team.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yes, I had multiple opportunities to lead on projects both locally and globally, collaborating with multiple stakeholders in the process. Additionally, I was responsible for a number of weekly and monthly recurring tasks. My team also supported me to pursue a voluntary role within GSK's industrial placement student network where I was successful in gaining a leadership role, developing useful management skills in the process.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I have developed my communication and interpersonal skills by working with a range of internal and external stakeholders across multiple projects. I have learnt new digital Microsoft skills through the use of Excel data analysis and data presentation using PowerPoint. Additionally, I have had multiple opportunities to develop my presentation skills to the wider Finance audience in a virtual format during our development days.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
My line manager and team both supported me consistently throughout the year. They would always offer guidance when I requested it, but they also allowed me space to problem solve on my own. This helped me to further develop my transferable skills whilst also knowing I had plenty of support to fall back on should I need it. Outside of my team, I saw multiple colleagues as mentors who also offered support and advice.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The company has a very positive culture that stood out to me when I first joined. Every colleague I spoke to was a positive interaction. I do believe there are times where the overall values of the company are not upheld as strongly as they could be, but there is a desire and drive from employees to improve this in the areas that I was working. The atmosphere in the office was always motivating.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend GSK to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to GSK
GSK has a long history of employing industrial placement students and so the support I received was excellent. If you are in the application process, I would research the company's values to ensure they align with your own morals. There is lots of opportunity at GSK to take on voluntary roles to enhance your experience and I would highly recommend making the most of these opportunities whilst you are with the company.
