Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
From early on in my apprenticeship I was provided with responsibilities, including being named Fee Earner on cases. This meant that I correspond with various parties and clients via email, in person and via the telephone as well as drafting legal documents (such as Witness Statements and Claim Forms). We work on a large range of cases meaning there is a lot of variety in day to day tasks.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
3/5
I enjoy the hands-on learning that my apprenticeship allows meaning that I can still study but also apply my learning to real cases. I also enjoy working with the clients and external professionals, such as Barristers, as they too build on my knowledge which is what the apprenticeship is focused on.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
From having such varied responsibilities, my skills are continuously developed. The other Apprentices that I work with have been extremely helpful too. Coming straight from A Levels to the apprenticeship, I came in with only foundations of skills which I have been able to build through hands on learning.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
At the beginning of each academic, my University provides a very clear breakdown of each week for the year which is extremely easy to follow. Tutors are always available and the firm respects the one study day a week and actively tries to avoid disrupting them.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
3/5
Our apprenticeship is quite independent but when support is needed, it is always given. I also find that working with the other apprentices within the firm has helped greatly too. We are given tasks with the confidence that we can complete them to a high standard and are given guidance when requested.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
As our learning is all online, it can be hard for my provider to truly see where extra support is needed but when asked, it is always given. Every 12 weeks I have a meeting with my advisor to ensure that everything is on track and tutors always promptly reply to emails and usually offer online calls if further support is needed.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
Due to the variety and uniqueness of cases, I have not yet been able to apply all that I have learnt from my studies to my cases but when they do align, I refer to my study notes and knowledge and apply this to the cases. The skills work we do separately to our legal studies I try to apply daily.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
2/5
As our team is very small, we are very communicative within the office with everyone. Not many social activities take place but there is usually an annual event.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Knights Solicitors to a friend?
Yes
Why?
It is extremely difficult to find a level 7 Solicitor Apprenticeship outside of London and so it is very inclusive of young professionals. We also get extremely hands-on learning in cases.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Knights Solicitors?
The company follows very traditional routes and so the ability to communicate through all types of media and work with multiple filing systems is essential to then succeed within the work provided.
