Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

Primarily bookkeeping for investment fund managers, I record daily transactions and reconcile bank statements using Xero. My responsibilities also include managing monthly payroll and pension submissions, with regular client communication. Additionally, I support the audit team by proofreading year-end financial statements and other ad-hoc work.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

Very much. There is plenty of variety in the workplace, learning and working alongside both the audit and management accounts teams. I particularly enjoy the practical application of concepts learnt in college.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have gained increased proficiency in using spreadsheets and accounting software, become more confident in seeking clarification when unsure and have improved at both my professional letter writing and telephone communication abilities through regular interaction with both clients and other professional bodies.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

My time is split, spending around 20% of my working hours either at college or completing relevant training. The individual units of my course are spread out with enough time between attending classes and taking exams to fully revise and gain a solid understanding of each topic.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

EVMS is very supportive with my college work, providing study leave the day before any exams. Also, upon completion of office-related tasks, they are perfectly happy for me to take out my college notes to revise.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

I was assigned a skills coach to track my progress throughout my apprenticeship. At college, students are given regular breaks throughout the day with coffee machines and snacks in the common areas and are provided with detailed notes and mock exams. The tutors are really approachable and can be contacted at any point during the course and it is a great way to meet other people in the industry.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

For me, the AAT has been really helpful in understanding the processes behind Xero and the overall structure of different businesses and will give me a solid foundation in accountancy before going onto the ACCA.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

There is a fantastic social life within the firm. We regularly head out together during lunch breaks and after work and attend annual conferences.

For anyone looking to complete an apprenticeship, they will be looking for an eagerness to learn and experience in a working environment. Research the company, looking into the services they provide and target client-base and whether these align with your interests. Ultimately, have confidence and be yourself.
