Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
As a Care Assistant in a Deputy Manager position, my role involves a combination of providing direct, person-centred care and supporting the wider team in the day-to-day running of the service. I continue to work closely with residents, assisting with personal care, mobility, nutrition, and emotional wellbeing—ensuring that dignity, choice, and respect remain central to everything I do.
Alongside this, I support the Manager in overseeing the day-to-day operations of the home. This includes supervising staff, helping with rotas, ensuring documentation is accurate and up to date, and promoting high standards of care across the team. I am often a point of contact for both staff and families, and I help ensure clear communication between all parties.
I also assist with audits, care plan reviews, staff mentoring, and ensuring that policies and procedures are followed. If issues or concerns arise, I help address them in a timely and supportive manner, escalating when necessary. My role is about leading by example—supporting the team while continuing to provide compassionate, hands-on care to the people we support.
Being in this position allows me to balance leadership with direct caregiving, which I value deeply, as it keeps me connected to the residents and ensures I can lead with understanding, empathy, and experience.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I’ve really enjoyed my programme and found it to be both rewarding and challenging in all the right ways. It’s given me the opportunity to deepen my knowledge and reflect on my practice, helping me grow both professionally and personally.
I liked how the Level 4 programme was directly linked to real-life situations I face in my role, especially around leadership, safeguarding, and supporting individuals with complex needs. It gave me the tools to not only do my job better but also support my colleagues more effectively.
Although it was a step up from Level 3 and required more independent study and time management, I felt motivated because I could see the benefits straight away in my day-to-day work. Overall, I really valued the experience and feel proud of what I’ve achieved.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Yes, I’ve definitely developed both new and existing skills in my role—particularly since completing my Level 4 in Adult Care, building on the foundation of my Level 3 qualification.
The Level 4 course helped me grow in confidence with leadership responsibilities. I developed a deeper understanding of safeguarding, care planning, risk assessments, and supporting individuals with complex needs. It also strengthened my ability to mentor and support colleagues, which has been especially valuable in my Deputy Manager role.
I’ve improved my communication and problem-solving skills, especially when dealing with sensitive situations involving families, residents, or team members. I’ve also become more confident in handling audits, supporting with supervisions, and maintaining compliance with CQC standards.
Overall, the training helped me step into a more senior role while still keeping the hands-on, person-centred care at the heart of what I do. I’m proud of how far I’ve come, and I’m always open to further learning and development opportunities.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
The structure of my programme was generally well-organised, but my experience with the assessors had some ups and downs. Initially, I had three different assessors throughout the course. The first assessor left due to other work commitments, which was a bit of a challenge as I had to adjust to a new style of feedback.
The second assessor I worked with, unfortunately, I didn’t feel entirely comfortable with, which made the learning process a little more difficult for me. However, the last assessor I had was truly fantastic. They were incredibly supportive, understanding, and patient, especially considering I was pregnant during the course. Their guidance helped me feel confident, and I felt fully supported through to the end of the programme, even as I transitioned into maternity leave.
The last assessor made sure I had the help I needed, and with their support, I was able to complete everything during my maternity leave, which I’m really proud of. Overall, while the journey had its challenges, the final support I received made all the difference in helping me succeed.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I’ve received a good amount of support from my employer throughout my programme. They’ve been understanding and flexible, especially when balancing my studies with my responsibilities at work. When I was pregnant, they were incredibly accommodating, allowing me to adjust my hours and work schedule so I could continue my studies without feeling overwhelmed.
The management team, especially in my Deputy Manager role, has been supportive in terms of providing time and space to focus on my coursework and practical assessments. They’ve also been helpful in guiding me through how I can apply what I’ve learned directly to my work, which has been very rewarding.
Additionally, I’ve had access to training and development opportunities that have complemented my studies, as well as support from colleagues who are always willing to offer advice when needed. Overall, I feel well supported by my employer, and their encouragement has definitely played a role in helping me succeed in my programme.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
I’ve received a considerable amount of support from my training provider throughout my qualification journey. While the first couple of assessors I worked with weren’t the best fit for me, the final assessor was outstanding. They were very supportive and helped me navigate the challenges I faced, especially as I was pregnant at the time. Their understanding and flexible approach allowed me to feel confident in completing the course, even while balancing maternity leave.
The training provider was always available for questions and feedback, and I appreciated the structured support they provided when it came to assignments and assessments. If I ever needed clarification or had concerns about meeting deadlines, they were responsive and offered helpful advice. I felt well-guided through the whole process, particularly when I faced any obstacles, and their support was essential to me successfully completing the programme during my maternity leave. Overall, the support from my training provider was invaluable, especially when I had specific personal challenges.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
I truly believe that my qualification has helped me perform better in my role, particularly by expanding my understanding of both care practices and leadership. The knowledge and skills I gained during the programme, especially in areas like safeguarding, care planning, risk management, and person-centred care, have allowed me to be more confident and effective in my day-to-day duties.
It’s also given me a deeper understanding of the responsibilities that come with a more senior position, like my Deputy Manager role, and has helped me to better support my team. I feel more equipped to mentor others, manage situations that require leadership, and provide care in a way that prioritises the residents' individual needs. The programme also gave me the tools to handle more complex tasks, such as care plan reviews and audits, which have a direct impact on the quality of care we deliver.
Additionally, the practical elements of the course allowed me to apply what I was learning in real time, which has been invaluable. The combination of theory and practice has enhanced my problem-solving abilities, improved my communication with colleagues and families, and has strengthened my overall approach to care. So yes, I do feel that my qualification has made a significant difference in how I perform in my role and in the overall quality of care I’m able to provide.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Yes, there are several extra-curricular activities and opportunities to get involved in at work. While our main focus is always on providing excellent care, there are also some great social and professional activities that I really enjoy.
For social activities, we often have team events and staff gatherings, which allow us to unwind and bond outside of the usual work environment. These events are a great way to connect with colleagues from different departments and strengthen team dynamics. There are also occasional charity events and fundraising activities that the team participates in, which can be a lot of fun while supporting good causes.
On the professional side, there are often training sessions and workshops that we’re encouraged to attend, which help with both our personal development and networking. These sessions are usually relevant to our roles and help us stay updated on best practices and industry standards. Additionally, there are occasionally local or regional networking events that are focused on care services, where we can share knowledge and learn from other professionals in the field.
Overall, there’s a good balance of social and professional opportunities to get involved in, which I think is really important for maintaining a positive workplace culture and supporting ongoing development.
