Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
Civil Engineer Apprentice. Day to day tasks involve the Setting up and preparation for getting a job up and running, For example: RAMS, Electricity connection Quotes and details, Drawing reviews/designs. Online forms and filing. When On-Site, setting out using measuring equipment and ensuring the project is being constructed as per the design.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
Thoroughly enjoying the start to my apprenticeship. Still learning new information each day but also settling into specific task now which I am leading.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Mainly all new skills learnt as I came straight from previous education. I learnt all about the start up and setting up process for construction projects and all the work that goes into getting ready to be onsite, as well as what happens once we are at the site and start work.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
Very well organised. Standard working structure like a full time job, just with the occasional week blocks in which I attend University. I am also able to fit University work into my working hours.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
When I need help or am struggling with something there is always someone who will be able to help. Sometimes this could be to do with University work or other times just general work queries. My line manger is very nice and supportive as well. If there's any tasks he gives me and I don't understand he will show me what it is that needs to be done or point me In the right direction.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
A decent amount. Whilst attending University there is a lot of support available for what ever you require. The Module leaders also make themselves available at specific times during the week when we aren't at University to attended an online call with them if we need assistance.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
Currently 1 of the 2 modules I have completed contributes to my specific job roll but still not massively. The first module being Structural analysis was more based on designs and design work which is import in my job roll to see and understand how they are produced and designed. However this is not specifically what I am involved in at work. Geotechnics & Materials was the 2nd module I have studied and this is a bit more included. We regularly under take ground investigation works for our sites to understand the ground profile. So this was a lot more useful because I could understand the reasoning for GI works and how different results and ground types effect the work we do. Materials also helped to understand why certain materials are used in the environments and situations they are.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
There are regular training opportunities which is good to socialise and also volunteering days in which we can socialise. We have events for networking as well. For example I will be attended a Flood and Coast conference.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Kier Group to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Throughout the start of my apprenticeship I was very welcomed and supported by everyone in my team. After spending just over half a year now in this role I feel as if I am contributing well to the work we do. Any issues or questions I do have can be answered by a range of people. We have a small team and office so the team is a lot closer than maybe those on bigger jobs which helps.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Kier Group?
Ask lots questions and get to know the company as well as the job role your interested in. The more knowledge you have the better.
