Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

As a trainee, I shadow engineers, learn to set out and survey with GPS, help with permits, carbon tracking, and health and safety. Every day’s different in construction, so I’m constantly learning and adapting to new challenges.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I really enjoy the programme—it’s flexible and gives me the chance to study at university one week a month while gaining hands-on experience. Work can be unstructured at times, but the relaxed environment and support from everyone at Kier make it great.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I've really developed my communication and teamwork skills, as construction relies on everyone working together. I've also learned practical skills like surveying, setting out, material testing, and basic CAD, plus gained a solid understanding of health and safety principles.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

The programme isn’t very structured, but that’s expected in construction—things are always changing. Each site is different, so most apprentices end up doing a variety of tasks depending on where they are and what stage the project is at.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

I get a lot of support from my employer—my line manager checks in regularly to make sure I’m happy with what I’m doing, and he’s honestly been great. Everyone here is really supportive, so I’ve got no complaints at all.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

I get a lot of support from my training provider too—they're always available if I need help with anything and make sure I'm on track with my qualifications. It ties in well with the support I get from my employer.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

The qualification helps a lot because what I learn in class often links directly to what I do on site—like material testing, surveying, and understanding construction processes. It’s great being able to see and apply the theory in real-life situations.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Yes, there are quite a few things to get involved in—there are social events, charity challenges, and opportunities to attend networking events. It’s a good way to meet people across different teams and build connections outside of day-to-day work.
