Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
I build and wire industrial control panels, this involves reading schematics, marking and drilling steel backplates, fitting components and various types of wiring. I work with the electrical design team to ensure the panels are manufactured to the clients specification, and meet the relevant water industry regulations. I am sometimes involved in the procurement process, and the testing of the completed panels.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I hugely enjoy my apprenticeship, both at work and at college. I am grateful for the opportunity to learn new skills whilst being paid. The mentors at work and college are very helpful and knowledgeable.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Since starting my apprenticeship, I have learnt many new skills. These include reading electrical schematics, recognising wiring colours and suitable sizes of wiring, and various methods of terminating. I have also developed existing skills like marking and setting out, and using hand and power tools.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
On the whole the course is well structured, though some of the modules at college seem strangely ordered. It can also be frustrating not being able to provide evidence for my portfolio on a module that has not been covered in the classroom. I sometimes have to keep photos and details of a job I've done at work for a long time before I'm able to upload them.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
Any support, materials for training, advice etc is all provided by my employer whenever I need it. I could not ask for more. My direct line manager guides me and makes sure I have everything I need, and the head of our electrical team helps me with the more complex theory elements of electrical engineering.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
My college offer me support and guidance whenever I need it. As the training I receive from my employer id so good, I don't often need it, but it's good to know my tutor at college will support me if required.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
The theory I have learnt at college gives me a much better understanding of how things work, and why certain aspects of the job are done in a certain way. As I work in an industrial setting, college is a good opportunity for me to learn more about the domestic side of being an electrician too,
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
There are extra - curricular activities to do at work, for instance 'moving through may', a challenge to log how much walking or cycling you have done in the month. There are also social events with colleagues from time to time.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Kier Group to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Kier gave me an excellent opportunity to learn a new trade whilst earning decent money as an older learner with financial commitments. I would not be able to retrain as an electrician if it were not for this. They make sure I have everything I need to do my job and course, and are quick to recognise my achievements. They are keen for me to progress beyond being an electrician in the future too, possibly as an electrical design engineer.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Kier Group?
Have a keen attitude and good attention to detail. Hard work and commitment to the course will be rewarded and recognised. Apply yourself and be clear about where you would like to end up withing the company.
