Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
I work on trains (the bogies to be exact.)
. The use and calibration of a variety of tooling (bore gauge, roughness gauge, torque wrench, etc...)
. Filling out formal and legal documentation for work completed (Component passports, measurement documentation, etc...)
. Preparing, sanding, cleaning and measuring different components (Axles, Wheel pans, Break disks)
. Assembly of axle boxes and bearings to axles
. Learning and practicing appropriate safety measures
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
3/5
I really enjoy being in this programme. I have no issues with anything I do at siemens, I love working here. However, there is current concern of my apprentice being shifted to another location not close to where I live and I was not informed of this prior to being hired. Sometimes I struggle to get teachers to answer my questions at my college also, which can be quite stressful as I only attend one day a week and its also quite a distance from where I live.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I've developed so many new skills in the 8 months I've been here so far. I didn't know how to use any of the tools I can now. I've undergone training for:
. Manual handling
. Fire safety
. Emergency first aid
. Over head crane training
. COSHH
Not only have I been able to develop my technical skills but also my soft ones. I work with people I usually wouldn't interact with and its taught me how to be more confident.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
There is support at siemens when I need it and If I want to go and learn something I haven't yet had chance to on the shop floor then they are more than happy to work with me to do that. I have a review every 3 months-ish, where we talk about how I'm getting on and if I need any support. SO I feel its pretty well organized.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
There are always open to talk if I need to. I have experienced some issues with individuals making inappropriate comments during work which I was supported with and they are happy to listen to any requests or concerns I have. The only area I don't receive a lot of support with is college, I do receive some but form September 2024 till February 2025 I was really struggling with the maths involved on my course and little help with this at the time despite consistently requesting for it. This was eventually resolved when the teacher was replaced...
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
2/5
Oops! answer this in the last question...
But I get a decent amount now, but I usually have to press repeatedly for it and elevate it to the head of department or my apprentice management for anything to actually be done. The issue with the maths class was a real uphill battle.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
1/5
N/A. This may help me later down the line within this role, however currently this does not impact my work as a first year apprentice.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
2/5
They consistently offer networking events for all the apprentices to attend but these do not take place at my place of work and often occur at NTAR or other siemens sites. However, due to my number of assignments and tight deadlines, I find these hard to attend.
