Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

On a day-to-day basis, my role consists of overseeing a number of ongoing audits with several separate teams consisting of around a dozen members of staff. I hold regular check-ins and review their work to ensure progress and quality.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I have always struggled with exams and have found some of the courses very challenging, especially within areas that I do not deal with during my normal working life. Although I struggled with the courses, I do really enjoy my job which made it worthwhile to qualify.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

Through my job and work life I have developed some incredibly valuable skills including public speaking. I feel however that the apprenticeship specific courses provided by First Intuition were very elementary which I communicated with them. This is of course driven by government apprenticeship guidance however.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

It is well structured. From my experience for the most part, the tutors have a good understanding of the subjects. Within the apprenticeship there is confusion around the process some times which I experienced with some of my skills coaches. I had a number of skills coaches throughout my time in the apprenticeship and did notice that some were not as engaged or understanding of the scheme as others.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

I receive a lot of support from my employer. I have as mentioned found the exams difficult but know that I have been backed every step by my employer despite numerous failures.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

The actual courses are massively beneficial to gaining a better understanding of the accounting profession. The apprenticeship courses and scheme however is quite elementary and probably does not factor in the fact that some individuals may not be new to their role and have a greater understanding than is ascertained by the elementary subject matter.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

I try to involve myself as much as possible in extra curricular activities within work. I run a social committee, and have been involved for a number of years in Sheffield Future Business Leaders which encourages community engagement and making new connections from professional backgrounds.

BHP has helped me through my qualification and has primed me for a future in a professional field.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BHP?
An asset which is often overlooked by new candidates is their ability to integrate into the working environment whilst also being personable and service clients and other members of the team appropriately. There is often a fine line which can sometimes be crossed, and gaining that understanding early on is very important but not often discussed.
