Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
I am an electrical and instrumentation technician apprentice which includes me working with electrical control devices, calibrating them and maintaining them to keep plant running with maximum efficiency and minimising downtime. It also includes maintaining lighting and electrical systems across site.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I have enjoyed my program as I have learnt a lot over my time as an apprentice both in work and at the training center. I have also enjoyed getting to know my team and working with a friendly group of people, both on the electrical side and the mechanical side.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have developed my skills in using hand tools and communication with others across site. I have also developed my teamwork skills as I am part of a team who all work together during shutdowns.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
The program I have been on has been good at my place of work, managing new problems across my apprenticeship pretty well to give me the best possible outcome in my career. The training provider has provided me with good facilities and support throughout my apprenticeship. The only issue I had during one of my years was the tutors lack of experience teaching classroom work and ability to communicate with younger people. My course was beneficial to my role, and we all worked together to overcome these issues, with both my management and college assessor provided by my training provider.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
My employer has provided me with a lot of help in developing my skills and knowledge, constantly pushing to develop the areas I am weaker in by providing me with a qualified mentor to educate me in these areas. My apprentice manager Harpreet has also kept track of me during her time at the company, making sure I am on track to reach my goals and providing me with support to make sure I can reach them to the best of my ability.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
My college assessors have both been very helpful in making sure I am progressing and happy with my workplace throughout my apprenticeship. As mentioned before there was a couple issues with one of my tutors not being very helpful during one of my academic years but everyone around me helped out to solve these issues as well as possible and support me in completing my assignments. The rest of the staff at my training center have always been very friendly and supportive when I have struggled with any issues or work.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
My qualification provided by my training provider gave me a wide range of knowledge for my role, completing assignments directly linked to my day-to-day life at my place of work. It gave me a deeper understanding of the equipment I work with but not all, as these can only be achieved through further training with external companies.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
My place of work has a sports and social club who hold events as and when they appear to get everyone involved with who want to attend, such as social gatherings and activities. We also used to run a five a side football event once a week which is no longer running but was very enjoyable when it was active.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Solenis to a friend?
Yes
Why?
They are a large company with lots of opportunities to progress and branch out into different roles throughout your career. I am someone who is ambitious to progress as far as possible and always push myself so this is a great place for me to do that and hopefully be in a more significant role within the company in the future. Everyone here is very friendly and supports each other in different roles to get the best out of the company.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Solenis?
Just be yourself. This is a very friendly company who want genuine people, not robots. There is life at Solenis and everyone responds best to a happy and friendly atmosphere, with room to challenge each other without being hostile. They also want to see people who have good communication skills and the ability to work well as a team as you are always working with people across site and new people that come in.
