Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
As a first year apprentice, as a team we are given a project which lasts the majority of the first year, the projects covers software, hardware and systems engineering and stands as an introduction to how projects work before beginning rotations. Writing code, designing CAD models and hardware.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I thoroughly enjoy the program, we have a fulfilling project that we are consistently working towards, everyone on the apprenticeship program and early careers team are kind and helpful but also know when to let you figure something out by yourself which is a key part of engineering.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have learnt how to write better and more efficient programs in multiple languages, I have learnt CAD design. Many soft skills have been development since being part of a team such as communication, delegation, time management and working under pressure

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
On the work side, very structured and organised, we know what we have to do every day when we arrive, although this is self inflicted by our own schedules, we do have a clear goal that we are working towards. The academic side could be more organised (deadlines, dates, communication)
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
Lots of support, there is a large network of current and former apprentices who are always willing to offer support or to point you in the right direction to someone who can help. There is an emphasis on building up your network and meeting as many people as you can who will be able to support your apprentice journey.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
Some good support, lecturers are often available for any queries if you need them for help on the week's work. Due to the nature of the apprenticeship there is limited face time teaching between the lecturer and the students so there is an emphasis on self teaching in your own time. Lecture content and delivery could be improved.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
Very much so, early in the year we were taught about best engineering practices and how to handle a project which came in handy. The programming module is also useful with learning the correct process to take when designing a software project. And overall, what we learn at University translates to what the company does since we learn alot about electrical systems and programming.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
Absolutely, there are always new activities being advertised every week, plenty of opportunities for networking, activity groups as well such as the couch to 5k group and there are multiple sports groups, i know there are a few football groups.
