I am a first year apprentice who currently studies full time at Harlow college. There is a variety of hand on work and written work, meaning you get the best of both. I have worked with electrical circuits and pneumatic systems, and I am now beginning to work on a small engine.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I thoroughly enjoy my course. Even when I have been pushed out of my comfort zone, I still enjoyed it and I am glad to have had that experience as it has lead me to meet new people and acquire new skills.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have obtained many new skills over the past few months. Not only have I acquired hands on skills with tools and equipment, but I have also gained confidence. Entering a new environment and meeting new people pushed me out of my comfort zone and made me more confident around new people.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

I believe that the first year at college is a great idea. It allows you to build your foundation skills and also takes away the stress of first starting at a big company. The following years of 4 rotations is also a great idea, as you’re able to find what you’re most interested in.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

Overall, the support throughout work is great. Whether I am on site or off site, there is always someone I am able to contact to help with any issues. The only issue is that some people may take quite long due to being busy, but there is nothing they can do about that.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

Most of the teachers at college are willing to sit down and help you with anything you need. The issue is with resources. In my opinion, I feel as though the college is underfunded as it lacks enough equipment.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

Gaining the skills that you get from the qualification is great for work. Although they may only be the basics, it helps build a good foundation to continue working on.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

At GSK, your health is a priority. Located just off of site is a sports centre, with a bunch of activities to partake in. Furthermore social events are regularly planned. This allows you to expand your social network or just catch up with others.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to GSK?
Be yourself. Presenting yourself well doesn’t mean you have to fake everything about you to look better. They’re looking for genuine people who will have a positive impact on the company.
