Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
My apprenticeship at Vodafone UK is in Network Development, specifically Capacity Planning & Design. I'm helping the team make sure the mobile network can handle everyone using it – all the calls, data, everything. A lot of it is about looking at how much capacity we need now and in the future. I get to work on projects that keep the network up-to-date, like moving frequencies around to make things faster (they call it spectrum refarming) and getting new tech like 5G rolled out.
I'm also getting to grips with tools like Qlik Sense, which is pretty cool for visualizing network performance – seeing where things are getting busy and where we need to improve. It's not just techy stuff, though; there's a lot of working with other people, like the engineers and the planners, to make sure what we're doing fits with what Vodafone wants overall.
It's a proper mix of learning the technical side and getting involved in real projects, which is exactly what I was hoping for in an apprenticeship.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I'm really enjoying this apprenticeship! It's great to be involved in real-world network projects at Vodafone, like capacity planning and 5G rollout. Seeing how my work impacts network performance is very rewarding.
I appreciate the variety – from data analysis with tools like Qlik Sense to learning about new technologies. The focus on developing both technical and communication skills is a major plus.
It's challenging but offers a fantastic opportunity to learn and contribute, setting a strong foundation for my network engineering career.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
This apprenticeship has significantly broadened my skillset. I've gained a deeper understanding of radio access network technology (2G, 4G & 5G) and network planning/optimisation tools. My data visualization skills, especially with Qlik Sense, have improved, enabling me to present complex data clearly.
Communication skills have been key, learning to explain technical concepts to various audiences. I'm also developing project management abilities, including time management and meeting deadlines.
Critically, my problem-solving and analytical thinking have been sharpened through tackling real-world network challenges. It's been a comprehensive development experience

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
The apprenticeship is well-structured, balancing practical experience with formal learning. Onboarding was clear, with a helpful mentor and organized team processes. Day-to-day work revolves around projects with defined objectives, allowing for effective time management. Responsibilities progress steadily, from basic tasks to more complex assignments like contributing to network design. The formal learning, including training courses, complements the practical work. Communication is regular, with team meetings and feedback opportunities. Overall, the program provides a solid framework for development, though flexibility is needed for ad-hoc tasks.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
Vodafone provides excellent support. My mentor offers invaluable guidance, and the team is always willing to help. I receive regular feedback and have access to comprehensive training resources. The company invests in my development, ensuring I have the tools and knowledge to succeed in my role.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
My training provider offers good support throughout my apprenticeship. They provide structured learning materials and resources, and there are regular check-ins with a dedicated advisor to discuss my progress and address any challenges. I can easily reach out to them for guidance on assignments and assessments, ensuring I stay on track with my qualifications. They recently signed me up to a Ericsson All Access Plus subscription.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
My qualification significantly aids my role. The theoretical knowledge, like network architecture, directly supports practical skills in RAN dimensioning. Skills in data analysis and problem-solving enhance my ability to improve network performance. Overall, it provides a strong foundation for effective contribution.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Vodafone offers various extra-curricular activities. Their emphasis on teamwork and collaboration suggests opportunities for social engagement. They have clubs for hobbies like a film club or running, and there are often social meetups for networking. Events like "Apps and Grads" in-office days also exist to encourage new connections.
