Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
I am involved in producing CAD drawings from construction projects and this makes up the majority of my work. I help to complete health and safety documents and design reports, using a mixture of information from site visits and from desktop study. I have undertaken various calculations and reviews to help designing engineering solutions.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I enjoy my programme. Sometimes tasks can be repetitive, but as much of it is very new to me and there is so much I have yet to cover even after 1.5 years, I am enjoying it all very much.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I have developed my maths and logic skills reviewing engineering schemes and undertaking calculations. I have learnt to use various new pieces of software particularly CAD. I have also developed my communication skills, interacting with members of the public, councillors, councils, and developers.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
My programme is loosely structured based on what I need to develop. There perhaps could be more structure, but I am happy with what I am doing and feel respected in my role.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
It varies, but often if I seek support out, my colleagues and managers are always there to give it to me. One of the engineers in particular is always looking to help me develop skills that I want to.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
Support from the college has been mixed. Some lecturers are much more proactive in their engagement and support than others, though all are willing to help if asked.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
It has given some key background to a new industry and although a lot does not aid in the day to day, it has gradually helped build up a fundamental underpinning of activities I am involved in, whether directly or not.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
2/5
Not a huge amount. We sometimes organise evenings out as a team, but not much as a company.

Would you recommend Kier Group to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I have enjoyed my time, like my team, and feel I have developed in many different ways as a result. It is a fresh start in a new career and I am very thankful for that opportunity.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Kier Group?
Be open minded as to what you want to do. Many jobs may surprise you in the different tasks and things you get involved with. At Kier, I have felt valued and respected, and acknowledged and rewarded for my efforts.
