Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
3/5
My day-to-day role does not involve a lot of economics. I email analysts in my department and organise courses. Some of my work is in Excel as well as Power BI, with the potential to work in R.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
3/5
Some of the online learning is good, but some modules are poorly taught with little support given.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
3/5
Foundational Excel skills. Power BI. Improved confidence and public speaking skills as well as some written communication.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
Clear module structure, but the length of Uni terms is poorly structured and apprentices don't get much of a break. Within modules, some do not give enough time to complete work. Deadlines for 2 modules at the same time are common, making it hard to stay on top of everything.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
Can always take my study day each week, as well as any additional study days granted (6 per year).
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
Reviews with an apprenticeship advisor approx every 2 months + access to University wellbeing support.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
Not much linkage in most cases. Excel skills were helpful.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
3/5
Some socials.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Government Economic Service to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Largest employer of economists - lots of opportunities, can meet a lot of economists.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Government Economic Service?
Be prepared for the random allocation of departments - you can't control it, and you are most likely there for all 4 years.
