Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

I complete testing on several types of packaging to compare different materials and which one is more suitable for the product. I also run our packaging lab and ensure all the equipment runs correctly and that we have enough materials stocked. I handle suppliers, communicating orders we need or repairs that need to be done and coordinate visits.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I enjoy the independence and responsibility the role gives me. It will provide me with a large amount of skills over the next few years that I wouldn't have gotten from going to university alone. The work experience I gain from this apprenticeship will be crucial to my future.

Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have improved my communication skills. I have done this by speaking to several people on site on a day to day basis and building relationships and a network. I have also become more clear during my time speaking to suppliers over email.
Time management has also been an improved skill during my apprenticeship. I have to balance a full time job with university work.

Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

Quite well. I am the 6th apprentice my team as had, they have a system for what the apprentice will do over their years at the company. As for the university side, it is also well structured. We are given our block dates for the year in one go at the beginning of the calendar year, along with a list of dates for when assignments are due. During the blocks the lectures are already decided and when told about assignments we are given the dates and steps for the whole project.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

I receive a lot of support from my supplier. I have a weekly meeting with my line manager to discuss my progress and the company have set up a lot of support networks for the apprentices.
My learning disability has also been supported well, I have received accommodations when required.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

The university has offered a lot of help when it comes to my learning disability, providing software and other support when needed. This includes a learning plan that makes my professors aware of what I need and how I am effected by certain things.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

It gives me a wider sense of the industry, instead of just the products we work on in our role.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

There are several sports teams, social gatherings, group chats and clubs in the workplace. It is a very community driven site.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Unilever?
Be yourself, they look for people that will fit into the environment and mesh with others in the company. Depending on the role you are going for, they are not looking at the knowledge you have.
