Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
At the moment, my time is split between being at college, for the training part of my apprenticeship, and being at Airbus for the working part of it. A typical day at college starts at 8AM and involves me taking part in different sessions both theory and hands on. I enjoy this because it is a nice mix of physical and more theoretical subjects.
A typical day at work/ Airbus involves finding my desk in whichever placement area I am currently working in and if I don't already know, I will check in with my placement owner if there are any specific tasks or objectives they would like me to work towards or complete on that day. At both work and college there is a 45 minute lunch break and canteens where food can be bought. Personally I prefer to save money and bring in my own sandwiches.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I thoroughly enjoy my apprenticeship scheme and would definitely recommend it to anyone considering it. Between work and college, there are always people to ask and reach out to for help. As well as lecturers and colleagues who have years of experience to draw from. It is also really fun to be in a working environment instead of a school setting all the time. It lets me feel more mature and grown up.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I have developed lots of new skills since starting my apprenticeship with Airbus. In both college and work, there have been challenges I have been unfamiliar with but managed to solve and overcome. This has also developed my resilience and problem solving skills. Job specific skills I have developed include mathematics, presenting and public speaking and IT skills.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
My apprenticeship scheme is really well structured. From a management point of view, my managers, tutors and points of contact have made themselves readily available and approachable almost any time and I feel supported in both college and work. When there are events or meeting I need to be aware of, there are invitations with plenty of notice and I can arrange my day around them easily.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
I do not receive loads of support from my employer, however this does not mean that it is not there and has not been offered. At this point in my scheme, I do not require much support in college work or work tasks which means I can complete assignments and tasks independently. Having said this, I have regular 1-2-1s with my managers and lecturers to check on progress and wellbeing from both my point of view and theirs.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
I receive a good level of support from my college lecturers through completing assignments as well as classwork. When I am unsure of a topic or problem in college, I am never afraid to ask for help and lecturers are never hesitant in assisting with any problems I have.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
Using experiences and competencies I have developed and learnt in college, I can perform better in work. I mean this in all senses. From meeting new people and having to make introductions with unfamiliar people, I have broadened my people skills and this helps at work. With more technical things like maths and mechanical principles, i can now better understand certain problems which arise and are dealt with at work.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
There is ample opportunity for extra curricular activities at work. There are several ERG's which are based around all sorts of different topics and each have activities and events for people to go to. Some departments are trans-national and have inter-department tournaments and this can be a global event. For example some departments play football in different countries every year.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Airbus to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Airbus is an amazing company to work for. If I can say that after just 6 months of working at Airbus I must mean it. The people you work with at Airbus are not at all condescending or managerial. It feels like everyone is around to help and that there is nothing that cannot be asked. There is a rich community feeling working at Airbus and expansion of that allowed me to become part of it and so others should get the same opportunity.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Airbus?
If you are not already familiar with Airbus as a company, do some research into the company and find out some facts and figures. This will look really good to interviewers. Even if you are unsure about or not mad about aviation, still apply, I wasn't before I applied and now it fascinates me. Just be yourself and take every opportunity you can. There are so many different cultures and personalities at Airbus so regardless of what you're like, you will have an equal shot at joining this great company.
