Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

I work in the early stages of drug discovery, predominantly in an laboratory setting. I have worked in molecular biology, which involves cloning and DNA scale-up. I have also worked with cell culture, and various expression systems. Finally I have carried out work in protein purification and various QC.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as an apprentice at GSK, the environment is positive and productive. Everyone is extremely happy to lend a helping hand and it is a great environment to develop oneself.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have learnt a lot of new skills since the start of my apprenticeship, both in and out of the laboratory. These include time management and independence.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

My programme is well structured and I have always got the support I've needed.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

I have always been provided with the support I require over the course of my apprenticeship.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

The training provider has not always provided all the support needed when it comes to the university side of the apprenticeship; there is often a lack of communication or delayed communication.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

I feel I have learnt a lot more (skills and knowledge) from my employer compared to my training provider.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

GSK is really great for morning, lunchtime and evening events. These include various sporting activities as there is a fitness centre on site, as well as various mental health events such as walks and crochet.
