Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

As an accounts trainee, I am involved in the preparation and creation of companies' accounts. I also assist in bookkeeping and preparation of VAT returns.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I enjoy my program a lot. The mix of working in the office, coupled with my time at college work very well together and complement each other, learning transferrable skills at work that can be used at college, and vice versa.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

Certainly, I have drastically improved my skills related specifically to accounting and finance, understanding my job, role and the subject of accounting much better than when i started. I have also developed personal skills such as communication (speaking with colleagues and also attending and speaking at open evening) and problem solving.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

Well structured, I learn each module in units, going to college once or twice a week for a few weeks, then sitting an exam at the end of the module. I then usually have a month break between modules, providing me with good work to college balance.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

I receive a lot of support - HR, managers and my colleagues are all very helpful if i have any questions.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

A lot - I have regular meetings with workers at first intuition where we discuss how college is going and various other things. The tutors are also very helpful, answering any questions and giving us work to do outside of college.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

I learn many transferable skills at college that transfer to work. For example my module surrounding preparing financial statements was very helpful as it includes a lot of things I do at work. This meant i became more knowledgeable and could do my job to a higher standard. The first intuition skills days also correlate to me performing better at work as they improve skills such as communication and leadership, which are useful in the workplace.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Yes, i have had the opportunity to attend and speak at several open events at different schools and colleges. There are also many social events (one every few months) and sports teams.

Why?
It is a great place to work as you're surrounded by very knowledgeable, friendly people whilst completing rewarding tasks and jobs. I have already recommended Smailes Goldie to a friend, who has subsequently submitted his application to join next year, so evidently i hold the firm in a very high regard.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Smailes Goldie?
Present yourself well in the interview process and try to complete the assessment tasks to the best of your ability.
