Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
Day to day I am in the lab developing new flavours and formulations as part of my projects. If I am not in the lab then I am most likely in a tasting ranging from a few samples all the way to 15+. Most of my interactions are internal, however I love to participate in external events which we are encouraged to do for example visiting schools, and helping with other internal/ external events
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I really enjoy the programme, there is lots of support from members of the team and encouragement to participate in events which mixes up my usual work. There is variety of roles as we have different placements within site. We spend at least a year in each team which allows us time to settle in and get to know the team/ role but also allows us to experience a broad range of environments.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
3/5
I learn new skills almost all the time, from improving excel skills to learning new procedures. I am also encouraged to work on my presenting skills which is something I particularly struggle with. As my projects go on I learn more processes which I am supported with by other members of the team.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
The programme is really well structured. We have multiple rotations throughout the 4 years which enables us to have multiple experiences and work in different teams. This is a great way to learn more about the areas we enjoy most/least. We also have dedicated study days which ensures we are able to complete our university work.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
I feel well supported within my team. I have frequent connects with my manager as well as having two buddies. One apprentice and another member from my team with who I have weekly connects with to ensure both work and uni are going well. I am supported to ensure I have time to complete my studies
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
If I require support then the lecturers are available via email or during our university block weeks. We are also able to access all support that full time students would be able to access. There are online library resources as well as extended library loans if required. We also have quarterly reviews with a member from the university to ensure we are happy and safe in our role.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
There is sometimes overlap with lectures and work, however work is much more practical focused rather than theory so often uni goes into more detail required than for my role. University is also much broader so often covers content which does not relate to my current sector but may in the future.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
There are sports teams onsite from football and netball to run clubs for varying abilities. Onsite there is also a golf course, squash court and tennis court which staff are able to make use of. We also have a variety of social clubs including bake and craft clubs as well as other seasonal/ occasion based activities that everyone is welcome to join. We have networking events with members in other areas of the business as well es external stakeholders and companies which we are encouraged to participate in.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Unilever to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Unilever is a supportive place to work, from the future careers team to managers and other apprentices there is always someone there to help. We are given time to complete our studies as well as encouraged to partake in events. I particularly enjoy the ability to rotate between teams will allows us to gain more experience in different environments. There is a large apprentice population which means there are plenty of people to ask for advise and to socialise with.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Unilever?
Just relax, be enthusiastic and curious. Be confident in your abilities and be willing to give your opinion. Have a basic understanding of the area you would like to go into. Don't worry if you don't have lots of experience just show you are excited and willing to learn.
