Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
The work on this apprenticeship is mixed between weeks within the training academy which has us studying everything gas related, to being out on patch where we will work alongside an experienced mentor who is doing boiler installations.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I’ve quickly fitted into the style of the company, what is expected from you, the day-to-day goings on both in the academy and on patch. This allows me to enjoy what I’m currently doing a lot more.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I previously had no knowledge in regards to engineering or gas installations. The academy is welcome to that and gives you the time and room to learn everything that is required to become an experienced engineer. This creates more comfort in the process.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
Everything feels organised and structured. The only issue I’ve personally felt within the process has been in that some of the tools which we should be supplied with at the beginning of the course are missing. This has caused a little confusion as some of these are required early on patch and in the academy, so that adds a little stress.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
Any support I’ve personally needed in terms of work load (clarification on a topic or a different viewpoint) has been provided in an easy and genuine way.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
Similar to the previous support question, I feel any support that I require is given to me without any confusing or hassle.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
My qualification is essential for my role and progressing in a career here.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
There’s always extra research that can be done in your own time, be it understanding tools, system schematics, etc… This can help benefit yourself when you then return to studying or working.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Centrica to a friend?
Yes
Why?
British Gas supply each learner with a ton of resources that some may find they would not financially be able to obtain otherwise, trust, and a career afterwards. They also took me on with no prior knowledge or experience which very little companies offer, so this has allowed me to enter this industry when I didn’t think I’d have a chance.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Centrica?
If it’s something you’d like to do, regardless of having any prior experience or knowledge, and you’re keen, go for it. It’s definitely worth it.
