Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

I am an assistant site manager. Currently I look after a project and most of the trades on site with the assistance of my PM. I Co-ordinate subcontractors, manage logistics and traffic management, contribute with sorting design issues on site, manage labourers and ensure H&S is compliant.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I enjoy my programme not only because it teaches me new skills whenever I go up to uni, but also because I get to meet people who are doing the same thing as me and get to have discussions about each of our experiences.
Kier often arrange events where you meet up with your peers.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

Before Kier I had not had any experience with construction. So I have learnt the basics on most aspects of construction, learnt how to deal with logistics and traffic management on site. I have learnt the basics on health and safety, temporary works and how to co-ordinate activities on site.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

The programme is very well structured in the way that the dates are told to you years in advance and everything is already setup for you - accomodation and timetables.
The only negative is that it is not very clear where they expect you to be at certain points in your career - need expected growth chart or something similar.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

Kier are very supportive and anyone who you ask in work will always make time for you.
If you are struggling to complete uni work they will allow you time in work to complete this, given that the project isn't too busy.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

Although I tend to learn more on site, I always learn something that is beneficial to my role whenever I attend university lecture eg. construction regulations and how to easily find them

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

There are a lot of events that tend to be with Kier, usually something at least once a month, and within the month of July, we have a bunch of different activities on each day which would be suitable for anyone.
