Overview of Experience

Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
On a day-to-day basis, you would sit in a given department and complete work set by your supervisor, help your trainee buddy on a project and attend and give presentations. The work would vary depending on your seat and your supervisor, but for the most part it would involve conducting legal research, taking minutes, drafting legal reports, proofreading contracts and potentially sitting in on client calls or team meetings.
What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
It was a very inspiring experience, despite being virtual, and confirmed that I want to be a solicitor with the firm. I felt I had a much better understanding of the firm as a whole, given that we had the opportunity to hear from all the practice areas, speak to the lawyers themselves and appreciate the dynamic of the departments you were sat in.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
I honed several skills, including time management, conducting legal research (and giving it to someone in an easily digestible format) and delivering a professional presentation. However, lots of the experience was really about reaching out to people to chat and ask questions about their careers, their time at the firm and what they thought about given issues.

Company Culture

How would you rate business leader involvement during the insight
5/5
What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
I found as a whole people were incredibly friendly and welcoming. Lots of lawyers reached out to me to say hi and invite me for a virtual coffee, which was very kind of them. It was obvious that everyone worked hard, but everyone seemed to be genuinely friends within their departments, and talked being seeing each other after work with the easing of lockdown restrictions, which was so nice to see.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer
I think reaching out to trainees on LinkedIn from the firm is great. It shows you're engaged, and you'll definitely learn some things about the firm that you can't get just from the website. It also gives you something/someone to talk about on your application form, and hopefully in the assessment centre interview. Trainees will be very happy to help you, and it makes your application more genuine.
