Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

I am an assistant manager of a pub and the day to day of my role includes running of the business in the absence of the general manager. Training and support of the team. I also ensure the business is ready for audits and authority visits. I also help to make sure the business is profitable.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I enjoy the programme a lot. I enjoy that I can learn whilst at work and fit the learning around my schedule. My teacher is a good role model and understands how I learnt and is flexible to it. I also like that the programme helps me reflex more positively with things and helps me with personal goals such as getting better with my English. It give me the confidence to complete my job role and succeed further in a career.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

So far I have learnt different management skills and how to use them to benifit the business on a day to day basis. I have also learnt how to communicate to staff better and empower them to be the best they can be. I am gaining a better understanding of my role and all of the small details that involves.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

The programme is very well thought out and is structured in a way that will revisit things you've learnt to help you remember it. It is organised very well with my teacher only a message away if I get stuck at all. He help me suggest different ways of thinking.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

I was originally promised that 8 hours a week of my 48 hour week would be put aside for me to complete my apprenticeship, however this has been removed shortly after starting the course. This is disappointing. I find lifetime is good at support. Greene king is a bit trickier, if I want to do holding of other pubs I ask my area manager and nothing comes of it.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

I get all the support I need. If I ever need help he is only a message away and is good at responding quickly. He helps me look at things differently that make my apprenticeship more understandable. He is a good listen and is also good at giving feedback. The support I revive is always productive.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

I am able to use lots of the things that I am learning within my day to day job role. They help me realise what methods of management I am using and how I can improve upon them. The course is getting me to refresh a lot of knowledge that is helping me understand the small details I may have forgotten in my role.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

We don't have many events within the company of that sort. We did have an assistant manager day every 3 months however that has stopped due to budget reasons. This was a good way to get to know other people within the area and further afield.

Would you recommend Greene King to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I would basiced on what you make of the job. Greene king are a huge company and struggle to give you a sense of belonging. However if you go to work at a pub as a manager you must make it a job you love.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Greene King?
Be ready for the ups and downs, it happens. You need to love the hospitality sector to enjoy this job. It's the customers that make it worth while. It's also the team you build and the relationships you make a long the way.
