Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
My job role is to plan, design, and supervise the construction and maintenance of building and infrastructure projects across the country. On a daily basis, I am out on site setting out/marking out the technical drawings that the design team have provided. This includes ensuring everything is set out in the correct location and at the correct design levels. Also on a daily basis, I have to carry out checks that ensures that things are being built to the highest quality.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I am only in the first year of my apprenticeship, however I really enjoy my apprenticeship programme as I am able to get the best of both worlds. Being able to study towards my degree in civil engineering whilst also gaining valuable experience within the industry. This experience allows me to put into use what I learn whilst studying at university in to real life

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have been able to develop and learn multiple skills during my apprenticeship, this includes skills such as:
-CAD (computer aided design) Skills
-Problem Solving
-Teamwork
-My attention to detail
- Critical thinking

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
My work to study balance is structured very well! I do block release weeks up at Coventry University, normally once a month, and the rest of the time I spend at work gaining real life experience in the industry. this really helps me apply the theoretical concepts I learn at university into practical applications
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
Kier is a very supportive company. I am able to dedicate time studying towards my degree during work hours which is particularly helpful especially during exam seasons. They have a dedicated team that are able to help you with any queries you have on and about the apprenticeship.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
Coventry university are pretty supportive when working towards my degree. They have a work place learning advisor that you have meetings with to ensure you are getting on well with the degree and is able to help with any queries/struggles that I have whilst studying.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
I find that understanding the theoretical concepts of things that I use within my role helps me to understand what and why I am actually carrying out a specific task within my role. It also allows me to be less dependant on my colleagues as I don't have to always ask them questions on how something works.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
At the start of my apprenticeship, Kier held an apprentice induction event where all of the apprentices within the company all got together, This was good as we were all new to the role and in the same boat so we could network with each other and start to understand what opportunities there are within the company.
