Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
As a Laboratory Science Apprentice, my role differs from day to day. Often, I will spend around half my time in the lab carrying out various labwork and then complete any office work/meeting. There is also the opportunity to get involved in outreach events and events on site.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I really enjoy my programme, the role is really enjoyable and the apprenticeship community at Unilever is really lovely. I have gained lots of skills and insight into the business that have built my confidence and allowed me to grow as a person.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have learnt so many skills over my apprenticeship so far including presentation skills, laboratory skills, time management, communication and data analysis. I have also had the opportunity to take part in many courses, including mental health first aid and many more.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
The work placements are very well organised and everyone is really supportive of ensuring you have enough time to study. The University aspect can be less well organised, depending on the module, as most learning is online.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
My employer has been extremely supportive throughout my apprenticeship so far. They have ensured that I have enough time to study, develop my skills and were very supportive when I started my programme as I had to relocate. They offer Apprentice buddies to ensure that there is always another apprentice you can go too as well.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
The support I receive from my University can vary. My Skills Coaches have been amazing and really supportive. The lecturers can be less supportive as they have lots of students and it can be difficult to get support from them.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
I don't always feel that my course relates to the work that I do. Some of the more applied units link very well to my role. I do think that the degree could be more tailored to link to the role but the skills you learn from completing the work do link to the role.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
There are so many activities to get involved with including sports clubs, clubs relating to hobbies and apprentice meet ups. There is also the opportunity to get involved in various outreach events and professional networking events. There is also opportunity to get involved with social activities through University.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Unilever to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Unilever is a great company to work for, they are very supportive and the apprentice network on site is amazing. There is great opportunity to develop your skills and explore things that you want to get involved with. There is lots of wellbeing support and social activities offered to apprentices too.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Unilever?
Research the company before you apply and go for it! The application process is very simple and friendly. Make sure you check you junk mail too as my invite to the interview went to my junk mail.
