Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

My role is in both formulation and appraisal of Unilever homecare products. I spend most of the day in the lab formulating fabric conditioners/ boosters for the project I am on. I also test the products in our washing machines and assess any residue left over as well as the impact on the fabric that has been washed.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I do enjoy my programme as I prefer to gain experience by doing something, rather than reading about it. Plus, the environment is friendly, and I know that everybody is willing to help. While balancing university and work can be stressful at times, I still find that I have enough time to continue my hobbies.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have learnt many new skills during my time as an apprentice. Not only have I improved my time management, my people skills and my ability to navigate the corporate world, but I have also vastly improved my capability in a lab.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

Unilever has a very structured programme, with role rotations every year allowing apprentices to gain the most from their time here. Also, I am aware of my responsibilities including day to day tasks all the way to my goal for the end of the year.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

I receive a great amount of support from my employer, especially in the first year. I find that I have always had room to make mistakes, and then grow from them during my time. My past and current teams are very helpful and always willing to set some time aside to talk me through something.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

I would say that my university offers a lot of additional assistance if needed, and that they have a clear structure to how we are taught the content. My skills coach is a great help towards me achieving my qualifications in particular.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

There is a slight disconnect between the content I learn in university and the work I do. However, there is still cross over and I enjoy the difference between them as otherwise it may feel a bit repetitive.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Yes, many. The future careers in my work place are a very active group and there is always opportunity to meet up both inside and outside of work for various activities, both sport-related and not.

Would you recommend Unilever to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Friendly place to work, with lots of opportunity if you just ask. There are so many possible job roles on my scheme alone and a huge network of apprentices to meet. The job is fulfilling without being too taxing.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Unilever?
Think sustainability, as it is one of our most important values and throw yourself in the deep end. Go outside your comfort zone and enjoy yourself!
