Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

Training to be fully qualified, The first 18 months - College on Mondays doing H&S, maths and theory. Tues-Fri at work in the training workshop doing practical tasks and testing, with the accompanying paperwork to learn the skills needed. Next 18 months will be out on site with instructors
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I really like the practical lessons as I enjoy working with my hands. I find the electrical subject itself quite interesting and was why I applied for the apprentiship in the first place.

How well organised/structured is your programme?

Very well. College on Monday is mostly theory, H&S, circuit components and maths. In work Tues-Thurs there is a list of tasks to work through, each one focused on a specific tasks and learning the skills needed for it
How much support do you receive from your employer?

AWE is very supportive. The instructors are there to assist with the lessons, the pastoral team help with our wellbeing and any personal issues we may be having (I have and they were very quick to help me through it).
Everyone has said to talk to them if we have any difficulties and they'll do what they can/direct us to the correct person otherwise

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

They initially gave us a very detailed workshop introduction and briefing on all the tools we'll be using. They've continued to give the occasional extra briefing on new tools and techniques we need, as well as links to youtube presentations. They wrote the tasks paperwork in such a way that it has all the information we need/where to find it that we are teaching ourselves while being available for any questions/additional help
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

This qualification is entirely aimed towards training us so that we can be qualified workers. Without it we're just unskilled labourers.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

We've already been taken to 1 tradeshow event and there are plans to visit future ones. There may be internal work social/sports but I haven't looked for them yet.

Would you recommend AWE to a friend?
Yes
Why?
It's a well paying job and if you can get the position, comes with job security. After being made redundant from my last job during lockdown this is a very important thing for me.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to AWE?
Fill out your CV with all your skills, never know what might be useful to them
Be honest on the application. They'll do extensive background checks and you don't want to be caught out.
Don't worry if you don't hear back from them soon, it takes them awhile to do the initial checks
