Industrial Placement in Genomic Sciences Review

Working with the single cell CRISPR team within the Genomic Sciences department. Work activities vary from day to day, depending on project requirements. Activities include human primary cell culture, genome editing, single cell transcriptomics, flow cytometry, reagent generation, data analysis with various bioinformatics tools, project meetings, presentation and discussion of results, troubleshooting with suppliers or subject matter experts, among others.

I was given a lot of responsibility, being accountable for my own experiments. I had to design, execute, analyze and present my results independently. I was also responsible for a technology development project, and had to manage timelines, liaise with relevant experts and decide on the project direction and next steps.

I have learnt many new skills, both technical and professional. New technical skills both in lab techniques, use of bioinformatics software, experiment design and interpretation of technical literature and documentation. New professional skills include business writing, reports and presentations, networking with experts, project management and self-advocacy.

A lot of support, from both my line manager, their manager and the rest of the team. I had weekly 1h meetings with my supervisor to discuss personal development and weekly 1h meetings with my team to discuss progress of lab work and troubleshoot together, as well as ad hoc meetings and informal catch-ups when needed. GSK has access to numerous training resources including seminar series, online courses and conferences.

Great culture of sharing a passion for science and supporting each other and collaborating across teams. Frequent social and team building activities, both site-wide, within the department or organized by IP unite, a network of placement students.
