Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
Working in cross functional teams involving brand, digital media, and finance. Supporting on brand renovation and innovations and bringing new products to market. Independently led digital projects in SEA. I've had the opportunity to work at a global and local level, meeting colleagues from all kinds of backgrounds.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I very much enjoy the programme. This apprenticeship has given me opportunities I couldn't have imagined having after sixth form. I have many personal highlights and achievements to thank this course for.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
Business acumen, financial reporting and analysis, building business cases, presentation skills (presenting to both senior leadership and work level colleagues), storytelling and effective communication.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
At the beginning we were told we'd have structured rotations across the 3 years organised by HR. In reality, this has been organised exclusively by myself with little involvement from HR. While it would have been great to have been informed of this at the start, it has helped me to develop networking skills and search for opportunities independently.
The study days at Uni fluctuate based on what year you are, but for the most part the Uni pathway is well structured.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
3/5
I have not engaged much with HR over the 3 years until my final year. All placement rotations were organised by myself and fellow apprentices who I swapped with. However, HR have been very helpful in my last year with sessions on offboarding opportunities and next steps after the apprenticeship, which is very helpful.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
Information from University can be conflicting at times. For instance, a lot of information regarding our end point assessment provided by the Uni was very different compared to what was provided by the examining board. This required multiple sessions to clear knowledge gaps.
Overall, however, the Uni does provide a lot of support with regular course boards where we can share queries and concerns about the course, as well as feedback. Alongside that, we have a personal tutor in our final year to support on dissertation and EPA queries, which is super helpful.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
The content we cover provides a theoretical understanding behind what I do in my job. While I can't make comparisons between university and work everyday, the university content definitely supports my understanding of workplace processes and strategies.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
We have charity sports teams, sports training opportunities, regular team and business group networking events.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Unilever to a friend?
Yes
Why?
There are incredible opportunities for apprentices at Unilever. You can get stuck into global projects with the potential to lead certain parts. You get to meet colleagues from all over the world, and even go on international business trips if you're lucky. Moreover, if you're working on a new product, you get a tangible reminder of your efforts every time you walk past it on shelf.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Unilever?
Implement factory visit days for marketing apprentices, this will help them gain a deeper understanding of the manufacturing process which has a great impact on marketing initiatives in FMCG companies.
