Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
I am responsible for implementing new Features and Bug Fixes to safety critical software systems within the aerospace industry. At the moment I work on the simulators for the Eurofighter Typhoon but have had experience across a variety of business units and teams.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
The apprenticeship is extremely challenging and there is always something new to work on which is extremely enjoyable. The responsibilities I have received motivate me to work hard and commit myself to the tasks at hand.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have learnt countless software skills including new programming languages and software tools throughout the apprenticeship. I have also improved my communication skills, ability to work as a part of a team and individually, professionalism, and confidence.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
Everything organised by BAE Systems is well planned and organised but the degree carried out with The University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) has been poor. Communication and teaching standards from the university have been disappointing.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
Regular reviews and communication with managers give us the opportunity to voice concerns and receive extra support if required.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
1/5
UCLan have been more of a hinderance than a help. The degree was extremely challenging often due to poor communication and teaching standards causing assignments to be delayed, re-written and even scrapped. Feedback on assignments has been constantly poor.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
Content learnt at University has been applied to my work where possible.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
3/5
There are opportunities to get involved in Apprentice activities but these are limited and not as widely available as I had hoped when starting here.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I have gained a huge amount of experience in a professional working environment whilst completing a degree and getting paid. I have no student debt alongside a packed CV which will help me in a variety of career paths in the future. However, I have achieved job security through the apprenticeship and set up relationships at work which will allow me to remain a valued engineer within BAE Systems.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
Do your research and understand what you are applying for. Be prepared to work extremely hard for the next 4 years as balancing work alongside University and extra curricular activates can be very tiring but is extremely rewarding in the end.
