Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
Problem Solving to ensure ITAR controlled parts are accounted for at all times during transportation.
To mitigate and reduce logistical bottlenecks in inbound freight via close communications with freight forwarders. To ensure AOG repairs can take place in time and also to minimize production line stops on site due to no material in hand.
Supplier, HMRC and customs broker communications vital to ensure smooth customs experience for GEA in relation to importation and exportation of goods into and out of site.
Issuing customs clearance instructions in a timely and correct manner to Freight Forwarders to ensure goods clear customs as quickly as possible. Incoterms knowledge is key to this role.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Several confidential projects were worked on during my time at GEA. Some included frequent interaction with the most senior individuals within GEA. These projects were of considerable size and the actions that I took as part of them were vital to the success of each project. You will be challenged and will be faced with having to make tough decisions which can be challenging at some points. Alongside this being able to manage communications with the largest of freight forwarders globally to challenge and dig deeper into problems faced carried a high level of responsibility.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
Customs knowledge has been gained in relation to the importation and exportation rules surrounding the HRMC. Department for Transport Known Consignor training is something that I was able to take advantage of while in this role. Known Consignor allows for in-depth knowledge around secure cargo and identifying suspicious or tampered shipping packaging. Was able to put into practice Kaizen and other lean methodologies that were taught as part of University course into practice within my role at GEA.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
Guidance from seniors and wider team were significant and projects you are part of will never feel like you are on your own. You have access to a large pool of other interns on site who are always willing to help. Along with a large pool of apprentices who will be able to make you feel comfortable within this placement year at GEA. Attitude to supporting placement students is resoundingly positive, it is a flat management structure as such approaching leads for help is usually a positive experience.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
Culture and atmosphere at GEA is inclusive and welcoming from Day 1. You are able to interact with charity work and volunteering throughout the year with a dedicated team to support community outreach. On-site gym and recent developments with planning for a running track through site all add to the health incentives offered. An internal scheme also matches pound for pound spending's on health related activities/equipment to a certain amount. Family day and Employment recognition day also are great ways that GEA gives back to its employees

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
Thoroughly enjoyed my placement year at GEA, it was eye opening and gave me lots of transferable skills along with the knowledge and ability to apply to graduate schemes before I even finished my placement year. The teams you work with are great and you come across/interact with several different business units in this department leading to great exposure in the role.
