Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
3/5
Commissioning engineering involves testing systems that have been installed on the new warships that BAE are building. We have to fault find for issues and find solutions to fix them. Some of our work is done in the office and this involves writing test forms, risk assessments and assessing engineering drawings.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
3/5
I enjoy the programme a lot. The work that we do is interesting even though it is sometimes challenging to understand at first. I also enjoy it as i get on well with the apprentices in my year as well as the year above, this makes the work a lot more enjoyable. The only negative that we have encountered is that sometimes we struggle to find work to do. This is only the case for now as our work depends on the ships progression so this will not be the case in the next few months.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I think that working here has made my communication better. In work it is a lot more of a professional environment so at first I was not as confident asking questions. As I have moved on with the apprenticeship I have become better at communicating in order to learn more.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
Just now it is not very organised as we are sometimes struggling to find work to do. This will not be the case for long though as work on the ship is due to increase. College could be more consistent, we have missed out on a sizeable amount of time in college due to strike days.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
We receive a good amount of support from our employers. every 12 weeks we have a review and during this review our work and attitude is assessed. As well as this we can also give feedback and get extra support if it is needed. Also people in work tend to be helpful if we need a hand or do not understand something.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
Support is available if we need but but we have not really had to use it yet. Overall i would say that there is support from the training provider.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
A lot of the work we do in college will not be transferable to our job role. This is a bit strange to us as there have been weeks in college where we have learned things that are not applicable to our role. However i have heard from the year above us that the next year in college is more applicable to the job role.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
There was a an activity week that we went on. This was fun and effective for team building and socialising as we had to work together to do things such as build a raft and go camping.
