Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

Typically I'll spend the day working on tasks/a project provided by my placement. This might involve, planning, implement, testing or document code that I've written. I also peer review other team member's work when it falls under the topic of software. I also complete work towards my Level 4 Diploma in Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I really enjoy it. I'm learning new things all the time and I always have opportunities to develop my skills. I'm also in an environment where its ok to make mistakes as long as you learn from them and progress.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I've further developed my object-oriented programming skills which I initially gained whilst doing my Computer Science A-Level. I've gained experience in a variety of programming languages including Python, java and C++. I'm currently writing matlab scripts. My team working skills have imporved. I've also gained the skills for code configuration.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

Each year is very similar in terms of when assignments must be completed by. I also know what's expected of me at all times and I also have regular learner progress reviews every 12 weeks.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

I've received all the support that has been necessary for me to progress. I have weekly meetings with my skills coach to discuss any concerns I have with my work or with personal issues and helping me to look after my mental health and wellbeing.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

I'd say I received about 2 hours of support each week on average in order to support my level 4 diploma. During University term time I receive about 10 hours of support when working towards my degree.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

Most of the time I feel like I learn most of the content for my qualification whilst on the job first and then later in the classroom. But it's never too much, it's more of gaining an awareness at a minimum. Usually I start learning how to implement concepts on the job then I'd learn why these concepts are important when working towards my qualifications
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Not really, or none that I'm aware of. Most of the events are either outside of the software domain, or arranged informally within my cohort of apprentices.

Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
Yes
Why?
They are a great company to work with. Lots of great incentive's and from my experience they are a supportive company to work with.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
Just be yourself. The company wants to invest in YOU and your character, your ideals and your personality. They don't just want someone to be a number. They want a person who is determined and resilient and shows enthusiasm in the work that they do. You also want to show that you're ready to learn and improve as well has having some core useful skills already.
