Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
As a Oral Care Digital Assistant, I had simultaneous projects with the purpose of improving the digital experience for users like designing components, fulfilling needs creating articles, improving brand .COMs, etc. with the additional aim of ranking higher on search, outperforming competitors, gaining 1P data and more.
This involved arranging meetings with stakeholders, designing decks for presenting/reporting to senior management, collaborating with team members and external agencies.
Each day learning something new at Unilever!
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
I was given plenty of responsibility and autonomy. They thoroughly encourage you to communicate, whether it's too much or too little responsibility, ensuring it's manageable for your wellbeing.
Furthermore, if there's a particular area, project or direction you want to experience, they will do their best to ensure this can happen by speaking to other functions or people. They expose you to various different areas and the projects itself can be quite different.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I learnt many new skills, particularly autonomy, adaptability and project management. Since you're provided genuine projects to complete with deadlines and goals, the independence provided with support is incredible, there's always someone available to help.
Additionally, I learnt about how Unilever operated on a global and local level as I worked with various global markets which is a great way of broadening your cultural experiences on how other markets think and operate differently.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
My placement underwent numerous changes from change of Line Managers, Directors and team members leaving near the beginning of my placement. Fortunately, my Line Manager and team was great at adapting and looked after me by ensuring the work I conducted was manageable and interesting. They sincerely looked after me and made me feel welcome as part of the team despite only being an Industrial Placement, by the end, it never felt like I was anymore.
Additionally, there's a Future Careers team and own HR team that answers any questions about your placement and offers training, workshops, opportunities like being a mentor/mentee and are super friendly and supportive with it.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The culture and atmosphere felt very friendly and relaxed. There was no pressure to ensure you must do work all the time, there were moments to be free and socialise as there's full trust by Unilever and team that your work will be completed and acting considerately towards other employees.
It was even better due to the office in London (100VE) was refurbished and they added some biophilic designs on the floors to encourage mental wellbeing and natural connection.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I thoroughly enjoyed my placement and would do it all over again. Currently, I am aiming to extend it by a couple weeks as I'm loving the work I'm doing and meeting my team since working a year has flown by.
The opportunities to learn a considerable amount and develop oneself is incredibly valuable and scarce elsewhere, Unilever truly cares about young people being developed too with a dedicated team, process and culture. It has truly matched and exceeded my expectations.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Unilever to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to Unilever
I think some keys factors Unilever looks for is an exciting desire to work, integrity and a true understanding of Unilever's goals and other aligned principles. Therefore, I advise to read on their news, information and see if it feels right for you.
With the video interview, practice looking into a camera and speaking to a screen if it is virtual, I think with the direction of how COVID impacted and the success of hybrid learning with technology, it's a skill that's now vital.
With the assessment centre, be your honest self, that's what they're looking for alongside your understanding of the company and function. Additionally, actively engage and listen to others, you're working as a team towards an end.
And once you're in, take the time and moment to learn everything, it won't be easy as Unilever is massive. It will take a few months but you'll also be able to see your development but also take this moment to see what's good or could be improved in the processes before you become fully immersed.
I think my inspiration was to have a meaningful experience and learn from a variety of possibilities and help find my own purpose in how I want to impact the world and make a difference. This is something Unilever will help you via a purpose workshop - highly recommend!
