Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
My role as a software engineer varies through each placement, learning a variety of skills such as SQL, Java and C++. You learn both at university and on the job, through tasks assigned to you buy your line manager and communicating with the wider team. You join meetings, and get fully involved with the work done by the business.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
This programme and the people at the company look out for you and your wellbeing, they will always try and help you in whatever you need. It is an amazing opportunity and a great programme.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have learnt a lot through my apprenticeship, including skills such as SQL, Java, using flight simulators and more. I have developed my communication skills, confidence. Your team is always willing to help and guide you if you get stuck.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
Well organised and structured, you have multiple points of contact who can help.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
You receive a lot of support from BAE, there are wellbeing coaches, mental health apps and more. You also have a designated member who looks after you, and keeps checking in to make sure you are alright. The people on your team will always answer and questions and guide you through your work if needed.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
You will receive as much support as you ask for, depending on the lecturer. Some lecturers are better than others, but all are willing to help and support. Some lecturers run support groups weekly, however due to work it is hard to attend these meetings. The university also has designated mental health first aiders.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
The qualification teaches you the theory behind what you do in your job. However, as you have already been doing the job, you sometimes aren't learning anything new at university, instead just revisiting what you already know. This does help you to perform better in your role.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
There are lots of activities to get involved in, there are sport teams, conferences, expos and more. You also have the opportunity to attend air shows, inductions and more. The company also encourages you to become a STEM Ambassador, which allows you to share your passion and experience.
